Crusades   十字軍

Black Death   黒死病。1340年代後半にアジアに端を発して1347~1353年にヨーロッパに広まった歴史上最大のペストの流行。ヨーロッパだけで2000万人、全世界で7500万人が亡くなったとされる。ヨーロッパでは人口の3分の1から3分の2が失われ、ローマカトリック教会の権威の失墜、ユダヤ人などの排斥運動、刹那主義など多くの影響を与えた。

Magna Carta   大憲章、マグナ・カルタ。1215年イングランド国王ジョン(John of England)が貴族の要求によって調印した憲章。国王といえでも法に従うべきことを明文化し、国王の権利を初めて制限した重要な法律。その後、実際にこれによって国王の権利が制限されることはなかったが、その精神はイングランド内戦(the English Civil War)やアメリカ独立にも生かされた。

Peasants’ Revolt   1381年にイングランドで起きた農民の反乱である。
